I was wondering a safe way to clean aluminum awnings on the exterior of my home and are they paintable?

michele s asked:

After safely cleaning (by safely I mean I have shrubbery near that I do not want to kill with chemicals) How do I prep them for a coat of paint to ensure it does not peel? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Use a pressure washer, and yes they can be painted with aluminum paint.

I would use a pressure washer to clean them, with a mild house wash and a scrub brush. There is a chemical that you need to use on the aluminum awnings finish before you paint it, the home improvement store will know what it is, it escapes me just now…

Good old fashioned soap and water will work wonders. Use a car washing sponge and elbow grease. A pressure washer may be too forceful on the existing paint job.Make sure you sand the area before applying the paint. This will make the paint stick to the aluminum.Yes they can be painted.
